Assault Weapon' vs 'Hunting Rifle'

Looking below at the specs for both, the is not a big difference.

Google search: assault weapon vs hunting rifle

As the above chart shows, not a big difference. I will start with the similarities.

1. Both are semi-automatics, and can only fire one bullet at a time when a shooter pulls the trigger.

2. Both can be reloaded in 2-3 seconds, not a whole lot of time.

3. There is not a military in the world that uses either one, not exactly true. Explanation; because of the higher accuracy at a greater range, and the higher muzzle velocity, most snipers in both the military and law enforcement fields, prefer hunting rifle-styled weapons, with a bolt action mechanism, not even semi-automatic, over assault-rifle-style weapons.

Now, let us take a look at some of the differences. there are not very many, and they are that great.

1. Muzzle velocity of an average assault weapon, 1,600 Foot-pounds per second. vs Hunting Rifle has an almost double the average, 2,700 Foot-pounds per second. In other words, almost twice the knock-down power comes out of the barrel when fired by an individual.

2. Effective range of an assault weapon, for a skilled shooter, is 380 yards, vs a hunting rifle, which has an effective range of 600 yards for a skilled shooter. Again, almost double.

3. When it comes to shooting a hundred rounds of ammunition. The person using the assault weapon is a little faster, 56 seconds, using slightly more than 3 30-round magazines. vs It takes a person with a hunting rifle 74 seconds, and almost 13 8-round magazines. Not a big difference considering the reload time.

For almost 100 years, Democrats, have been trying to strip the 2nd Amendment, Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens, by passing law after law after law violating their rights under the 2nd Amendment, none of these do anything to address the real problem. That is the illegal importation and the illegal sale of fully automatic assault weapons that are manufactured overseas. More people were killed over the July 4th weekend by these illegal weapons, with no news coverage, excluding the occasional mention by the more Constitutionally conservative news outlets.

I just wonder who, among our elected leaders, is getting a kickback from the people who are importing and selling these illegal weapons in our communities. And why are these same politicians, fighting so hard to remove guns from the law-abiding citizens in those same communities?

A lot of people will site the Militia Act of 1903 which established, what we today call the National Guard, or Organized Militia, as described in the 'Act' itself. They, however, do not discuss the second type of Militia outlined in the 'Act', That is 'the Reserve Militia', which was to be comprised of all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 45, given the passage 'Civil Rights' and 'Equal Rights' legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President, all minorities and women are eligible for membership in the 'Reserve Militia', as long as they meet all other requirements.

I do believe that the 'Various States' do have a requirement to set standards for who can be a member of that 'States' 'Reserve Militia'.

All States require a permit of some type to purchase a firearm. The minimum requirements for a permit to even buy a gun; are 1. complete and thorough background check and 2. complete psychological profile. these 2 steps would have prevented the recent mass shootings in both Uvalde, TX, and Highland Park, IL.

Once a member of the Reserve Militia has purchased a firearm, they must complete at least 8 hours of weapon-specific safety training, and at least an additional 8 hours of proficiency and marksmanship training.

All of that to say this, In my opinion, the States can and should restrict the rights of certain citizens to own a firearm. These are just a few of the requirements that military and law enforcement use.

Also, the Reserve Militia can be used to supplement local law enforcement agencies in high-crime, cash-strapped municipalities. Since militias are law enforcement, but residents of the communities they are patrolling, they could be used as mediators between the two.

  1. Joe, 3 questions (I'm not a hunter though I've gone shooting):
    1. If they are virtually the same, why do the mass shooters choose the AR or another semi-auto military weapon?
    2. Can't the AR-15 be modified easier than a hunting rifle?
    3. Aren't hunting rifles bolt action?
